A.J. Duffy

Background: Born and raised in Brooklyn, New York. Attended New York public schools, including P.S. 152 and Midwood HS.

Education: B.S. in community organizing from Antioch College. Associate degree from New York City Community College in marketing management. Teaching credential and special ed (LH.MR) credential from Cal State L.A.

Teaching career: Organized and taught in daycare center for working parents in Philadelphia from 1967-72; worked in community daycare center in Venice, CA, from '72-'74; joined LAUSD in '74 as a special ed assistant and substitute teacher; earned teaching credential in late '80's; served as special ed assistant at Salvin Special Education center, taught at Drew Junior High and Franklin HS. Spent the past 14 years at Palms MS as a special ed teacher for five years and dean for nine years.

UTLA activism: Chapter Chair, House of Representatives, strike captain in '89 at Franklin HS, Board of Directors, West Area Chair from '96-'02, editor of Teachers for Change newsletter.

Ana Valencia

Background: Born in Apatzingán in Michoacán, Mexico. Moved to Los Angeles when she was four. Attended Rowan, Malabar, Belvedere MS, and Roosevelt HS.

Education: B.A. from Cal State L.A.

Teaching career: Began teaching as a bilingual teacher on an emergency credential at City Terrace in 1996.

UTLA activism: Served as co-chair and on the SDM council, House of Representatives, crisis coordinator, information assistant, UTLA Secretary (2002-2005).

Joshua Pechthalt

Background: Born and raised in L.A. and Colombia. Attended Dakota, Queen Anne, Wilshire Crest, John Burroughs MS, and Fairfax HS.

Education: B.A. in philosophy from UCSC; master's in Latin American Studies from University of Wisconsin at Madison.

Teaching career: Taught ESL for two years in Cali, Colombia, and 21 years at Manual Arts High School.

UTLA activism: Chapter chair, House of Representatives member since 1985, nine years on the UTLA Board, including three as Central Area Chair, cluster leader during 1989 strike.

Julie Washington

Background: Born and raised in L.A. Attended Virginia Road, 24th Street, Raymond Avenue, Mount Vernon Junior High, Fairfax, Hamilton, and Narbonne.

Education: B.A. in child development from Cal State Northridge.

Teaching career: Children's center teacher for Santa Monica Unified for seven years; teacher at Normandie Avenue 1997 to present.

UTLA activism: Chapter Chair, Board of Directors, House of Representatives, CTA State Council.

Gregg Solkovits

Gregg Solkovits
UTLA Secondary Vice President

Background: Born in Minneapolis, Minnesota; raised in San Fernando Valley by two teachers and charter UTLA members.

Education: Attended Darby Avenue Elementary, Nobel Junior High, and Granada Hills High where I graduated; I received my Bachelor of Arts in Political Science at Cal State Northridge (Cum Laude) with additional heavy emphasis on Journalism and Art Design 2-D. Credentialed in four subjects and hold a CLAD.

Teaching career: Worked for one year as a day-to-day substitute. Then taught 38 subjects or so at Monroe High, including eight years as Journalism Advisor and eight years as AP U.S. Government and AP Comparative Government teacher. Also did stints as Chair of the school's Professional Development Committee, as Social Studies Department Chair and as an SLC Lead Teacher.

UTLA Activism: 10 years as Monroe co-Chapter Chair, 10+ years as Monroe Chapter Chair; 24+ years as member of UTLA House of Representatives; 20+ year member of UTLA Board of DIrectors; nine years as UTLA Valley West Area Chair; chair, UTLA Publications (Communications) Committee.

David Goldberg

David Goldberg

Background: Born and raised in L.A. Attended Micheltorena, Burroughs MS, and Fairfax HS. Third -generation teacher.

Education: B.A. in community studies from UCSC.

Teaching career: Bilingual teacher for nine years in East L.A., with the past seven at Murchison.

UTLA activism: Chapter chair, House of Representatives, Board of Directors. Walked the line in '89 with his mother as a Fairfax High student.

Betty Forrester

Background: Born and raised with two brothers in Lynwood, California, where parents still live.

Education: BA from Pepperdine University (LA campus on 79th and Vermont) with Standard Elementary and Standard Early Childhood credentials.

Teaching career: Taught 33 years in South and Central area schools: grades Pre-K, 1,2,4,5,6,7,8 and 9th grades. Last 25 years at South Gate Middle School.

UTLA activism: Chapter Chair, Co-chair and Vice Chair at South Gate Middle School. House of Representatives 3 terms for South Area. South Area Secretary and steering committee member. South Area Board of Directors and Area Chair. Member of UTLA Organizing Taskforce, Periodic Assessment Taskforce and currently on Living Contract negotiating committee. AFT 1021, Vice-President. Member of County Federation of Labor.
